Learning From Parents' Experiences in the NICU and HRIF
NICU and HRIF sites are invited to join a new collaborative project focused on elevating parents’ experiences and perspectives. This mixed-methods study - developed with input from parents and an interdisciplinary team - aims to better understand the challenges, barriers, and positive experiences families encounter both in the NICU and after discharge throughout HRIF.
Despite the critical role of families in the care journey, parent perspectives have rarely been fully integrated into understanding real-life challenges and the factors that promote resilience across the NICU–HRIF continuum. Through this project, we aim to center parent voices and learn directly from their insights, using their lived experiences to inform education, practice, and quality improvement efforts in NICUs and HRIF programs across California.

About The Project
Parents of infants <32 weeks’ gestation will be offered the opportunity to participate in a short QR-code linked survey, primarily focused on open-ended questions, at around the time of NICU discharge or at HRIF follow-up visit. Our goal is to achieve ~ 150 surveys from around NICU discharge timepoint, ~150 surveys from HRIF period, and ~ 20 parent confidential interviews.
Center Involvement
- Socialize / discuss Parent Voices project with NICU and HRIF teams.
- Share handout (flyer) with parents-families of children born very preterm.
